Imagine being unable to write your own name, read a street sign, or understand a simple document. For many adults, especially in rural Bangladesh, these are daily realities that limit opportunity, independence, and dignity. In Chuniyapara, Kushtia, a transformative initiative is breaking these barriers by empowering adults with the gift of literacy.
In partnership with British American Tobacco Bangladesh (BATB) and Prerona Foundation, Amal Foundation launched a Basic Literacy Training Center to equip adults, particularly the elderly, with essential reading, writing, and numeracy skills. The program covers Bangla, English, and Mathematics, ensuring participants gain practical tools to navigate everyday life.
The center welcomed 60 adult men, many of whom had never held a pencil before. Over the course of the program, they learned to write their names in Bangla and English, form words, read newspapers, understand documents, and solve simple mathematical problems. These skills, once out of reach, have unlocked new levels of independence and confidence.
The transformation has been profound. Graduates of the program now manage daily tasks with dignity and participate more actively in their communities. Beyond personal growth, their literacy has uplifted their families, inspiring children and relatives while strengthening community bonds. This project is more than an education initiative, it is a catalyst for change. With the combined efforts of BATB, Prerona Foundation, and the local community, the Adult Education Program is fostering empowerment, self-worth, and opportunity. It proves that no matter one’s age or background, education has the power to change lives and create a brighter future.
