In the elevated terrains of Bogura, part of Bangladesh’s agriculturally rich Barind region, farmers have long struggled with a critical challenge: although the land is fertile and ideal for crop cultivation, access to water for irrigation is limited, and many areas lack electricity infrastructure. This makes traditional irrigation methods, which are often reliant on diesel pumps costly, unreliable, and harmful to the environment. Without an efficient water supply, crop yields suffer, directly impacting the livelihoods of smallholder farmers and the food security of their communities.

To address this pressing issue, Amal Foundation in partnership with One Ummah launched a Solar Irrigation Pump Project, installing five solar-powered pumps across key farming zones in Bogura. These pumps harness the sun’s renewable energy to deliver a consistent and uninterrupted supply of water, enabling farmers to irrigate their crops regularly without dependency on fossil fuels or electricity. The solution is both eco-friendly and cost-effective, requiring minimal maintenance and drastically reducing operational costs compared to traditional fuel-powered systems.

The benefits of this initiative are already being felt on the ground. Local farmers now have greater control over their crop cycles, can grow multiple harvests throughout the year, and are no longer burdened by fluctuating fuel prices or power outages. In addition to improving productivity, the project also helps reduce the community’s carbon footprint and promote climate-resilient agriculture, making it an ideal long-term investment for regions vulnerable to climate change.
